Sweet or savory? The choice is yours!
Every morning, we serve freshly baked bread to our guests. This bread is made with just five simple ingredients: organic flour, salt, yeast, a drop of olive oil, and water. Our guests love it, especially because it’s not sweet. No sugar added—not because the Dutch don’t like their bread sweet, but more because they prefer it to be a choice.
It’s quite simple, really. We offer “fruithagel” and “vlokken,” which we let our guests generously sprinkle onto buttered bread. These are sugar-based sprinkles or flakes that are real chocolate or fruit-flavored. In America, they’re often used as cake toppings, but in the Netherlands, they’re a popular way to sweeten up our bread.
The Dutch love cheese, and not a big surprise that they love to put it on their bread as well. So, if you don’t like your bread sweet, we also have Dutch imported matured cheese. This cheese is the ripened version of our young Gouda. This cow cheese has been matured for about four- six months, resulting in a slightly sharper taste compared to the young Gouda cheese.
The choice is yours!
Stay tuned for more breakfast news. Have a wonderful weekend everyone!
P.S. While this blog was already written, our neighbor sent us a BBC article about ‘hagelslag’ and why expats living in the Netherlands think we love this Dutch treat so much. You can read it here.
