Generally regarded as the Dutch equivalent of Christmas, Sinterklaas is a holiday where people get together with loved ones to exchange gifts, and is especially a big deal for young children who receive sacks of presents from Sinterklaas and his helpers the Pieten.
Traditionally associated with the early December Sinterklaas holiday in the Netherlands are 'pepernoten' aka 'kruidnoten'. are hard cookie-like confectioneries made of Speculaas, roughly the size of a coin and shaped as a flattened hemisphere.
Because I do like our Dutch traditions, and I want to share them with our guests I decided to bake a bunch pepernoten.
We wish all our friends and family a happy 'Sinterklaasavond'.
